Damber Singh Gurung, an all rounder Cricket Player from Bhutan, represented Bhutan National Team and is currently playing for Tashas United. Currently he is serving Bhutan as a National Coach. Damber Singh Gurung has played a key role in Bhutan's rise as a cricketing Nation.

Excerpts from an Interview with Damber Singh Gurung from Bhutan by Vishal Yadav

2. At Present: Are you a Coach? A cricket player? A cricket related business? A club Owner? A cricket Fan? Mention your work profile (if anything else).

  • My role in Bhutan Cricket is National Coach and Coaching Head of Coaching Department 

3. Do you play for any club or a team? Mention their names? When was it founded? Where are you working currently?

  • I was captain of Bhutan Senior Team. Started representing country in International Tournament organised by Asian Cricket and ICC from 2003. Yes, I do play domestic cricket from my own Club (Tashas United). 
  • Tashas United established in 2013. Most of the players are young and talented.
  • I am a full time employee in Bhutan Cricket Council Board 

4. Where do you and your team see yourself in coming 5 years? Where do you want to focus in order to improve your cricket? 

  • With regard to national sides, Bhutan has U16 Boys Team, U19 Boys and Girls Teams and Senior boys & Girls Teams.
  • Our teams plays  in International tournament organised by Asian Cricket Council. And teams like Nepal, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Myanmar and Malaysia participates.
  • Bhutan has so far reach final in U15 boys twice, U19 Boys Once, Senior Boys Once and U19 Women's once in ACC Tournament. Senior boys has played twice in ICC Pepsi World Cricket League Division 8.
  • As our country is situated in Himalayas region, quite difficulty to get flat land. We organised cricket in small squares.
  • Recently, govt. has approved (Full Size) land from us in Southern Bhutan and we are going to make cricket academy with indoor, international size ground with turf wickets, hostel etc.
  • We hope that in near future Bhutan teams will be playing higher level cricket. Until now we are struggling not having proper pitch, and proper ground but after new ground comes up, team will be playing better cricket.

7. Would you like to come to India for a tournament or a coaching camp? Or do you want to travel any other country (if Yes, please mention the name)? 

  • I would like to visit India with my national teams for matches. Cricket standard in India is very high from school level to national level. It would really help our emerging team to learn more. But Bhutan Cricket being non -profit organisation and we fully depend on ICC and ACC for financial support, so it will be quite difficult to make practice tours.

8. What are the challenges you are facing in your country's cricket? If any, how do you feel to overcome those challenges?

  • Cricket should not die here and i hope it will not. Biggest draw back is facilities, grounds, resource person.
  • We are in a way in development of coaches, Umpires, other staffs but most importantly keep interest in youth because they are our future. So we conduct schools competitions to Club.

9. One thing that you instantly need that would boost the involvement of people in your country's cricket? 

  • More Domestic Cricket Competition.

  • I like all teams. Some are very strong and some are working hard to compete. But India has always been one of my fav. But this time I like to see South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies doing well.
